Apparently he was planning a new line on Everest, solo and without oxygen.

Nuptse - helluva place to practice/acclimatise. Says everything about the bloke.

Very sad news indeed.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Very sad news for the climbing community. Was looking forward to meeting him in person (I've met folks who have, said he was a nice guy). Extreme alpinism is a fun but dangerous game. Even the best of us lose our lives in these harsh places. It's up to us to always exercise careful decisions. Even with the best practices sometime we get wildly unlucky. :( Ueli was an outstanding climber and will be greatly missed.
