Anybody been up to Shasta recently? Thinking of heading up Avalanche Gulch on Saturday. Curious about snow and ice conditions.

I’m usually rerouting to Mt Whitney at this time of the year (due to lower avalanche hazard). However, if the conditions are right, I may go to Shasta as well. I wonder if the East/North THs are still accessible or how much additional walk they would require.

Post beta/pics on your return please and climb safe.

Anyone know if Hidden Valley has running water? Rangers seem to think it unlikely... and webcam doesn't show anything significant for snow there. But thought I'd check if anyone has been. Never been there myself this time of year.

Well if anyone interested the only reliable water is currently at the obvious places... Horse Camp, Whitney Glacier, Bolam Glacier, Inconstance Creek, Gravel Creek, Ash Creek, Cold Creek, Clear Creek, Mud Creek, and Squaw Valley Creek. Anything else you find will be running off a snow patch or maybe something intermittent higher up that disappears a bit lower. Brewer Creek was running a couple weeks ago but not anymore.

Hi - does anybody know the avalanche and snow conditions on Shasta right now (West Face and Avalanche Gulch)? Planning to head up this weekend. Thanks for your help!

I was just wondering the same thing myself and unfortunately cannot answer the question. However, I will note that there is a forum thread for this that people have been posting on for the last four years: :)

A good source of information is the Fifth Season climbing and weather report hotline. They update it every day.

One thing to note is that the freezing level (at night) is expected to be pretty high, above 11,000 feet if I read the NOAA forecast correctly.

Also curious about conditions in Avalanche Gulch. Going to be nearby and have a few days to spare.
Is the snow consolidated? Snowshoes? Temps look pretty warm.
Route under thumb rock covered? Or need to go thru the Red Banks?
Thanks

This time of year I would normally take snowshoes to camp (or at least halfway up if going in a day) and crampons from there.
