Palisade glacier conditions

by Simkin » Tue May 30, 2017 12:21 am

What are the conditions on the trail leading from Glacier lodge to Palisade glacier? Do I need snow shoes?
How is the glacier and the chimney? Do I need snow boots above the chimney or I can finish it in climbing shoes?

The North Fork trail is clear to the cabin, and becomes solid snow by 1st lake. It's easy climbing, I'd wear my boots for the route. It's been very warm with poor freezes in the alpine, so watch for snow and rockfall in those gullies.

Not sure I understand what you mean by becomes solid snow. That the trail becomes completely covered with snow or that the snow is firm? I don't need snow shoes? How far have you been?

Sorry, I meant solid coverage. And yes, snowshoes wouldn't be a bad idea. The snow is supportable in the morning, then becomes punchy by mid day. I live in the area, and have been as far as the glacier a few times this spring, most recently on the 26th. Hope this helps.

Do you think I need a bear box if I camp at Third Lake?

I don't think they're required in that drainage, but probably not a bad idea. The bears are certainly out.

Wonder how did the conditions change? I am finally going out this Thursday. To the North Palisade summit via U-notch and chimney route.
