fugitives flee into the bush, then call police for rescue.

The car was eventually abandoned on a track off Tree Trunk Gorge Rd, off the Desert Rd, near the Three Sisters bends.

The driver and passenger had run off into the bush.

Mr Taylor said police tried to find them but they actively avoided officers and were not found.

As one of the callers only had 2 per cent phone battery left at the time they called, police have only been able to obtain minimal details on their whereabouts.

Police from the Bay of Plenty district and a helicopter searched the area until 11pm last night but they were not found.

Mr Taylor said police were now seriously concerned for their welfare considering their lack of experience in the bush and inappropriate clothing they had on them.

He said conditions overnight had been very cold and wet and it was likely both would now be suffering from hypothermia.

It doesn't look like they are going to make it out alive.

The two are now missing and presumably dead.

If Hākopa Ngaronoa and Vincent Taumira ever make it out of Tongariro National Park alive, it will be a miracle

Had they been able to free solo 5.4 with gloves and a haul line, they probably would have made it.

I'm not sure why so much search effort has been put toward trying to find people who are running away. They don't want to be found, just sit by the road and wait for them to show up and then take them to jail.

These guys are smart... run off into the bush... escape the police... then call for help all the while directing police to look in the wrong area. Then the police think you are dead and stop looking or stay in the wrong area while you walk away.

Criminals in New Zealand are a lot smarter than the American ones.

Na man, these guys are lost. They have their gang the Mongrel mob have been out looking for them as well because the police gave up. All they did was steal a car. You can not survive in the New Zealand bush in cotton clothing.

This is them looking.

Today search teams found some clothes and evidence of a recent fire, but nothing else has been found since.

They took the clothes off tho.

They probably have some kind of spiritual connection with the mountains around there. They are the volcanos that started when Maui and his brothers speared the great whale that is now the north island.

Well, at least that solves the cotton issue.
