Tips (or partners) climbing Huayna Potosi, Bolivia

by vasilli » Sun Dec 03, 2017 6:12 pm

2 friends and I planning to climb Huayna Potosi (6100m) and Illimani (6400m) in Bolivia this February. Our previous climb was Pico de Orizaba (5700m) but other than that, we are pretty fresh.

Looking for technical and gear tips for these objectives, and/or a more experienced partner(s) to join us, so that we can learn the ropes, literally. :)

Has anybody had personal experience on these mountains?

February is not a good month for climbing these two. It's the rainy season, which means fresh snow on these peaks. You may get lucky with the weather and the avalanche conditions, but I wouldn't bet on it. It's much better to wait a few months. The normal season is roughly from May to September.

This. February is probably the worse and most dangerous month to go.

If you are stuck going to Bolivia in February, then head for the desert peaks in Bolivia. Peaks such as Licancabur or Uturuncu can be reasonable in February.

Thanks for the tips. We are not "stuck" yet. Still planning. Will take your advice and not attempt those peaks off-season.

Is there anything recommended in Central/South America in Feb? I'll research Licancabur and Uturuncu!

February is prime season in Central America, Colombia, Venezuela, and most of Chile and Argentina. It is OK for Ecuador.

In South America, the areas to avoid in February are Peru and Bolivia.
