While I'm sure the best of intentions was considered when creating this forum, it really seems to have degenerated into a bunch of blathering. I'll 'fess up to contributing to that.

But it's looking more like ArCee dot n00b every day, and that's not a compliment. Their community forum was ripe with tangential rip-offs posted by people trying really hard to be clever and cute. It's already the mode d'emploi here and you know what happens once a precedent is set...

It got old reeeeallllly fast. And their Community forum equated to SP's PnP and now Ethics, Spray and Slander as well.

Soooooo, I say we just get rid of the durned thing. Anything unmoderated, regardless of topic, belongs in the skanky version of PnP. Post pics of Boobs galore there (and don't forget Gee DoubleYah as one of them) and I won't get involved in that boyhood slagheap.

This monster really needs to go before it gets more publicly stupid than it already is.

Obviously, people are not taking this forum seriously if one looks at the threads. Does anyone really believe that those who get into sprayfests are going to restrain themselves elsewhere and take it here? Please.

The Elves should keep doing what they always have-- nuking what's inappropriate or sending it to PnP. Now we have a silly forum with its silly posts and titles popping up on the front page. It has no climbing-related value, and it's far less interesting and amusing than PnP, so it doesn't even entertain.

And I repeat-- it will never contain those who launch into spray and flame wars. Never. Those things are spontaneous, and the people engaged clearly don't care what they're doing.

I could see just an Ethics forum because that's a huge part of climbing/mountaineering/backcountry activities. Let it be just ethics and let it be moderated.

Or just let those discussions continue in General and they'll get the readership.

+1 on keeping it purely Ethics (or getting rid of it altogether, because the ethics debates are spawned inside of other threads).

In principle this forum is a great idea, as a place where argument can happen over climbing ethics. Having said that I don't think 9-page flame wars over, say, Dean Potter climbing Delicate Arch or Steve House vs Russian-style alpinism occur often enough to justify an entire new forum...

I agree, too much blather is pushing down the interesting topics on the Recent Forum Posts section on the front page. Keep the forum, block it from the front page?

Also, I'd love to see less Bush bashing inserted randomly into posts, or at least equal time devoted to Obama bashing (he drank bud light at the beer summit, what a loser)

You may be right. I've never met Guyzo and have no interest in contributing to such a forum, but it did strike me as possibly of some interest for those that are tired of the politics in PnP. As it stands right now the threads and discussions are mostly lame. So maybe I'll nuke it if the trend continues. Seemed like an interesting idea, so I figured, what's the harm? There are a lot of things the elves can/t change, but this one we can experiment with. I don't know how to make it invisible to the front page, we'll have to wait for Matt to take action on that. I'll send him a note.

As I'm getting more familiar with the idea behind its creation, I am gradually becoming less opposed to its existence. So far though, it has mostly been a substitute for PnP, so it seemed more or less like a way to get your PnP topic on the front page. There have been a couple interesting threads though, such as Guyzo's chipped boulder, so maybe there's hope ...
