Oh, they climbed the climb.....

The first bunch of climbers were pretty mad..... stormed off after making disparaging remarks about my young friends gender - and climbing status -

But there is more.... on the way out (if you have never been there - you traverse over some water - 5.5 ) they chopped a key foothold, making the traverse like 5.9, and they declared to others, who were on the traverse. "there that will keep out the rif-raf" .....

Pretty lame.

Ugh, that's ridiculous! Sometimes I hate people! What a bunch of *sses!

Yes, indeed.

I just can't figure why some people do what they do.

Been there a bunch. My wife actually fell in her first time on that traverse (though sadly I didn't get to witness that since it was before I knew her).

More to the point though, that is unbelievably bad form! That deserves a bust in the chops for the offenders. Completely, completely unacceptable.

I hope not.

Not like the surfers do, they will f-up your car, just because your from the valley.

One of the best things about climbers is the acceptance of other folks at the crags.

Apparently not in the Malibu area.

Yeah, I have a feeling this might be a problem because it's Malibu. Too close to all the Disneylanders.

Are you serious? Who was it? Time, date and description would probably do, if you don't know the names. "Malibu Chipping" as a thread title on ST and MP would probably be enough to generate an i.d.

But I have a hard time remembering any single spot on that traverse where a single foothold could dramatically change the difficulty. Maybe it's changed since I was last there.

Someone can't occupy two places at the same time. They can pick one or the other. I can think of similar situations at the gym (the not-climbing gym). If I'm using the bench press, I can't tell someone to stay off the incline press because I'm going to use it next.

And the people your friends encountered had such an easy decision. They could have just said they'll go to the route and let your friends do the warm up.

Just goes to prove, people aren't assholes on the Internet; they are assholes everywhere.

It sounds like this guy was just a loose canon. While Malibu can (well, does) get crowded and can lead to having to wait while some 5.8 climber tries to bag that .11b, most of the people there are generally pretty friendly or if not friendly, at least accomodating. I don't think I've ever seen someone like the doofus described in this thread. I have seen that out at Josh unfortunately.

just climbed at that area yesterday!
man what if could somebody add a wooden foot hold so my lady could get back there! or put up the planks.

G.K.
in order to say that you have the right to reserve a route it should be good practice to open the rope bag and ready your quickdraws for the climb.
people can't be talking shit like that, but then again some people are just not too smart.
the crowds at Malibu are fun!

What would you do?
State the obvious: "And we were going to climb that one, what's your point?"

That's the nicest thing I could think of. You could try being creepy:
Set your gear down carefully, do a quick stretch, a "shake off", then walk slowly and deliberately right up to whoever made the comment (If they're already on the climb, just pick your favorite group member). Walk right up to them, get as close to their face as you can and look sharply in their eyes (like your trying to read tiny text written on them), and say calmly; "Excuse me?"

Of, for those of you who've seen the movie Snatch; "In the quiet words of the virgin Mary; Come again?"
