Hi, I am looking for some mid-weight (softshell?) pants for hiking / climbing in cool weather. I already have lightweight non-cotton convertible (to shorts) pants and some warm insulated and waterproof pants (ski). I need something in between that breathes well, moves well with me and is usable in cool weather (30-50deg?) for hking / climbing many hours, handles precip. well etc.

I live on an island with no outdoor stores that carry anything resembling what I am looking for. I have read all kinds of reviews and product descriptions but its hard to tell the actual weight / thickness and feeel of the fabric from online information.

I cant afford to buy many pants so I need the pants to be versatile and durable. Any ideas?

A lot of people I know like REI's softshell pants. The Acme and Mistral have gotten good reviews.

I have had really good luck with REI's Taku pants. They are a mix of hardshell and softshell so they breath really well and keep me dry.

I just took my Arcteryx Gamma AR in that kind of conditions and loved how they behaved. They are relatively cheap, too (by Arcteryx standards).

I got the Mountain Hardwear Navigation Pants on sale. They are on the way. Will review them as soon as I use them in colder weather.

I really like the MH Transition tights. They're loose enough to be comfortable, but trim so they stay put of the way - great on the bike. They cut the wind and shed light rain, and are
warm alone, and super - warm with long underwear. I plan on using them as light snow pants this year.

I have a couple pair of Marmot Scree pants and love them for temps down to the 30's

There 4 way stretch, super breathable, and comfortable.

The 1st day I had them it was in the 40's early in the morning and we were scrambling and climbing(and not sweathing mind you ) and was sold day 1 with the durability as well. (read- scraping up chimneys/corners)
And they are suprizingly breathable in warmer temps

addition-all depends on your build. 6'3 and thin here 34' waist

If you want the best (according to many reviews, not just me) go try on the patagonia guide (now called the alpine guide I think) and the Mammut Champ. Buy whichever fits.
