Midwest Lowpoints

by woodsxc » Sun Sep 06, 2009 3:06 pm

In response to the Midwest "highpoints" thread and allegations that I hate the Midwest  , I have started this thread. Yes, we have highpoints, but far too many (and in my book, one would be too many) are dull and unimpressive. Heck, the Illinois highpoint was made by Native Americans! What do we have, you ask? Well, we do have Devil's Lake, home to some undeniably great climbing, but surrounded by a veritable sea of corn and soybeans. We've got the Porcupine, the Huron, and the Sawtooth Mountains, beautiful and rugged ranges yes, but do any reach more than 2,000 feet? There's great flatwater canoeing, pretty decent fishing, a few wandering moraines and serpentine eskers, remnants of a bygone era of glacial advance and topographic upheaval in the region, really great long-distance biking trails, good neighbors, and the title of "Breadbasket of the United States", but none of these things are mountains.

Therefore, I propose we stick it to the figurative man with this thread. Post the best negative topography in the region! Be proud of depressions, bluffs, caves, and anything else that goes down instead of up.

Some of my favorites are Mammoth Caves and the ravines of Turkey Run State Park in Indiana and Starved Rock in Illinois. What are your favorites?

Mystery Cave in SE MN: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/ ... index.html

Haven't been there yet, but will soon. Some other private caves in the area too.

And for the record, MN's highpoint is 2,301 ft. 8)

You're right, my mistake. However, IL and IA are only 12XX, WI and MI are 1900 and change, IA 1670, and OH is a towering 1550.

Yeah, true. I was just up at my folkses near Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, sailing a tiny boat on Lake Superior and trying some sea kayaking for the weekend. No summits to speak of, but it's sure nice up there. Here's to making do.

Lake Michigan or other great lakes

by grabbs146 » Wed Sep 09, 2009 3:29 pm

sailing on the lake has no mountains but, it dose have some big waves very close together on a windy day. Much worst than the ocean with the same conditions. One more good low point is my basement bar. No one leaves thirsty!

In addition to woodsxc's mention of Turkey Run -- nice, but very very crowded -- try The Shades nearby. Similar terrain, better waterfall, fewer crowds. More mud, too.

Thanks Arthur, I had forgotten all about Shades! Hike the Devil's Backbone if you get the chance, it's a cool formation.

Drw a line from ntohse places, through Hocking hills, and right down to the Ohio River. Ths is the "Black Hand" sandstone formation, and it's chuck full of pretty topography. Hop in your car and explore. ;)
