He suffered head trauma as well as a serious back injury resulting from the fall. From what the first responders said he fell about 60ft. It seems he was running it out a little too much and they think he slipped while placing gear. A piece was found on the ground about twenty feet away from the belayer which they think was the piece he was trying to place but they will never know for sure if it was his. On a route he knew well he probably felt comfortable running it out somewhat. One slip, one unfortunate fall, no helmet all can lead to a disaster. He decked on a slab I believe. So technically, he did not deck "the ground" but did hit a formation on the way down. I have yet to hear anything regarding the belay. I am sure a lot more information will come out in the next few weeks. Hopefully it will resolve a lot of our questions...... which I still have.
