I'm 5'10" and about 145#. Most medium shirts and jackets are the right length, but they fit like they're sized for someone twice my weight! Smalls are the right width, but waaay to short.

What company (companies) make outerwear that fits people with an athletic build? Mostly, I've found this when trying to find long sleeve button down shirts, both for hiking (poly blend fabrics) and hanging out (flannel and wool shirts). Who makes shirts that fit skinny people?

Not everyone is a lumberjack, so stop sizing shirts that way!!!

ahhh, add a couple more inches to your height and the problem only gets worse. 28" waist, but 42" chest. Two companys flirt with the idea that they could actually sell enough pants to "real" climbers vs those thinking about climbing (the wider versions) to make any money at it. Look at pRana and Mountain Hardware. Now finding a "small long" in stock is a whole 'nother adventure. Cheers.

I have found that Lowe Alpine and Cloudveil tend to have a skinnier fit.

I'll check the brands you guys mentioned. Columbia makes some nice button downs that are pretty cheap, but they just fit like tents.


Psst, Dow. I was able to get a pair of MH Defiant ski pants in a small-long off of Tramdock last winter. First pair of winter pants that ever actually fit me.

I have a similar build (5'9", 153 lbs) and have found that European brands (e.g. Mammut) fit much better, probably because they aren't made for fat Americans. Patagonia's technical stuff has been good for me as well. I've had bad luck with Mountain Hardwear.

Patagucci's "formfitting" styles are pretty good. I've also had good luck with Dead Bird (Arc'Teryx) sizing.

But both of those are expensive propositions.

Excellent clothing, custom fit to your measurements. Same price or sometimes cheaper than "big name" companies.

I am a huge fan of everything Arc'teryx. Mammut is awesome as well. I have also had luck with some longer length REI pants in their skinny waist size.

Man I hear you! 6'3" and 160lbs XL is long enough, but you need to be 250lbs to fit those shirts. I tried to do the weight gainer died just to make clothes fit with no luck.

MEC (www.mec.ca) also makes long stuff, but it's hit-and-miss and required trying it. Patagonia is not really better though, a lot of their jackets are short & fit me like potato bags, others are good fit. I usually have to get XL due to the length, and those two companies have worked best (I'm over 6'5", 180lbs). MEC Fusion is my favorite softshell and it's relatively slim-cut in XL (much better than patagonia equivalents I tried), so is Patagonia Houdini, etc. Getting burlier would help too

Good luck with pants, I haven't solved that one yet (32 waist, pants are way too short) - I think the closest to perfection that I found is pRana but my other soft/hard shells are too short, which works OK as usually I'm wearing boots+gaiters or ski boots... otherwise I buy 34 and wear them with a belt, which I hate and they are still too short... I joke that I buy short pants on purpose, so I can see my rock shoes better without rolling up the cuff...

Mammut and Arcteryx both make good long pants, though the Mammut Long sizes are hard to get.
