Wow, that was fast. Need to get up with my road bike before the masses return.

They'll threaten too. Then they'll raise some taxes. Then they'll let it rot anyway.

Figures we finally get some progress towards opening Mt Williamson again and now the road will be gone...

Gary, why do you hate ACH?

I love ACH but not the crowds. I definitely hope the seasonal closure between Vincent Gap and Islip saddle remains in effect.

I love long approaches. And want to see the San Gabriels go wild again, at least as much as possible.

Well, they did go wild, as in burned to the ground :D

I believe that is actually the day they are going to reopen the section from La Canada to Angeles Forest Highway - not the entire route.

Ah, yes, that would make sense because some people from the north side of the San Gabriels actually use that road.

I stand corrected. Yes, I talked to someone today that confirmed that it is only the section from La Canada to the with Angeles Forest Highway that will open.
these roads are the jurisdiction of CalTrans, and LA County.
Ironically, the foerst service would rather the roads remain closed.

If you're into reading about whether there should or should not be roads into the "wild," I would recommend the book Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey. It describes his personal experience about being a ranger in Arches National Park, I think, before there was an official "road." Interesting reading, to say the least.

Red Box to Islip Saddle

by WileyCoyote » Fri Feb 12, 2010 5:27 pm

Why not just close ACH from Red Box or Chilao up to Islip Saddle and open Hwy 39 up to Crystal lake, but with a toll and waiver signed to go up from where it's currently closed to public to help cover costs of maintenance and rangers or other NPS personnel to police against littering.

They could also limit vehicle size past Clear Creek to Red Box/Chilao and "reopened" Hwy 39 to keep out large "recreational" vehicles. And police PCT and Gabrielino trail to keep mt. bikers off of there. Plenty of other trails for them to roam.
