At what point does a beginner progress to an intermediate?

Postby Clark_Griswold » Fri Nov 13, 2009 4:18 am

With the semantics threads going strong, I thought I would add another.

When does a beginner climber become an intermediate climber. When they do their first class 5, when its an exposed 3, when they summit a high peak in winter, or when they are dam well good an ready?

That's nice, and it's probably the best way to go from beginner to intermediate to master of the art!

When they start calling ME with plans and objectives and goals and gear.

When they take the reigns of their own climbing. A lot of beginners never are able to rise to this self-starter status.

Take a newb on an outing; you'll see what 'beginner' means  . I think there are a lot of small skills we take for granted after going out in the mountains for a few years.

Perhaps more like "A key to achieving mastery is to know you are always beginning."

Not to put words in anyone's mouth. Just my take...

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities - but in the expert's mind, there are few.

I can always go to sleep. What does it mean when you have trouble waking up?
