Winter ascent of Eagle Mountain

Postby Alpinist » Thu Nov 26, 2009 3:09 am

I'm planning to do a winter ascent of Eagle Mtn sometime after the holidays, perhaps in February. I'd love to have some company.

This should be a relatively quick trip. It's just a day hike and can be done over a 2 or 3 day weekend depending on where you are coming from.

I'll post updates/reminders every once in a while as we get closer. If anyone else is interested, just give shout. It'd be great to get a few of us together for a mini Midwest SP gathering. A winter ascent of a mountain, albeit a small one, is not something you get to do everyday in the Midwest. (Can't let those Coloradans have all the fun...)

Any interest in camping overnight?

There are some sites at Whale Lake, near Eagle Mountain in the BWCA, or sites at some of the state parks on the North Shore.

I might be interested in camping, though we'd probably have to hike in and set up after sunset. At least for me, it's a pretty long drive... That could be fun and also good practice for anyone that is looking to gain some winter camping experience. We'd have to get a camping permit though.

The permits are self-issued at the trailhead. Filling one out is mandatory, even for day use, overnights can be self-issued in the off season, and sites can't be reserved.

Just at thought.
I can see it being a pretty long drive for some. It is a great hike though. :D

I might be interested in the camping idea too. It would be a nice way to gain some winter camping experience indeed. How cold does it get up there and how much snow do you expect?

Varies a lot.
I've camped up there in the winter and had nice temps (10-25ish) though there are plenty of below zero temps.
Snow varies a lot too, though there's usually a good bit on the north shore. I camped last December and got about 16" of snow overnight, and another 1-2 feet on the drive home, but that's definitely not the usual.
Plus, there can be a big difference between the lakeshore and a couple miles inland.

Hard to make a prediction.
Temps = not bad to way too cold.
Snow = a little to a lot.

I'll do some research of past NOAA reports.
