Moving to TX...can I climb?

Headed to San Angelo (west of Austin), anything to do out there? I suppose Ice Climbing is out of the question! Hiking would be cool; anything with a rope would be great!

Thanks

I guess that means no...at least not by San Angelo.
It looks like there is some rock around Austin, and of course plenty at Hueco Tanks.

ice climbing - no.

rock climbing in central texas:
enchanted rock
reimers ranch

rock climbing in north texas:
mineral wells

you can also do rock climbing in oklahoma if you're up for the drive.

you already mentioned hueco tanks.

lots of nice day hikes around central and west texas

lots of good desert backpacking options in west texas

that about sums it up.

The only good thing about San Angelo is that it is a reasonable distance from Big Bend and the Davis Mountains. There is some roped climbing out there. The Davis Mountains are better as the rock in Big Bend is very crumbly. Chuck Lohn would be the best person to contact for Davis Mountains rock. He's FA'd a bunch of stuff there.

"By the time he was 19, he had completed over 100 first ascents on rock routes throughout west Texas,"

Link

There is nothing about his routes in West Texas in his book, (out of print for a while) so the only way to find out would be to contact him. Not sure if that is possible or not. He's been working over seas quite a bit.

Other than that, enjoy your drive to Reimer's Ranch State Park. :-)

Palo Duro Canyon has some climbs too (4 hours) but there is nothing in print about the routes.

Get ready for a culture shock. San Angelo is way out in the middle of nowhere. Not much too do there.

We're in Mineral Wells climbing during the winter here and there. Let me know if you want to join us sometime. We also mountain bike quite frequently. Believe it or not, there is quite a bit of biking to do here.

San Angelo is Flat. You need to head further west or go to the central area, Austin, San Antonio.
