Jake Norton has a presentation on Mallory that I saw the other night. He was on the 1999 team that discovered Mallory's body as well as the subsequent 2001 expedition looking for Irvine. Included in the slide show are photographs of some of the artifacts they brought back as well as a short clip of the film. Incredibly fascinating stuff and well worth seeing.

Jake has a blog on this at http://mountainworld.typepad.com/mountainworld/2007/08/noel-odells-fin.html. Good reading.

I've been following this mystery for the past 15 years and hearing Jake's assessment lent yet another realm of possibility. If only Irvine's body and the camera could be found...

Tom Hornbein was at that presentation as well and relayed the story of a dinner he had one evening with Noel Odell. They were talking about Mallory's disappearance and where Odell has been quoted saying he last saw the two. Odell's definitive comment? "I know they were on the Second Step." Boy does that change things. He was, after all, a geologist.

BTW the American Mountaineering Museum has one of the O2 canisters from the 1924 expedition on display. Okay, so it's an oxygen canister, but it's one of THE oxygen canisters.

Seeing that stuff every day is like walking with giants.
