Skip the sack and stuff it directly into your backpack.

Or, buy a compression bag. This can greatly reduce the volume that your bag takes up in the bottom of the pack. As a bonus, they are usually waterproof as well.

I had the same problem, I actully ripped the stuff sack that my sleeping bag came in. I just bought a bigger compression sack. If you have the extra money, you can buy the water proof ones.

You can usually get it smaller when you get it into a compression sack, and you don't run the risk of getting it wet as easily too. But whatever works best for you!

I like the opaque lightweight granite gear compression sacks too. Starts big, compresses small and I can see whats in it without opening the sack. (Handy if you have a lot od down crap)

Stuffing it in your pack in a small plastic kitchen garbage bag will keep it from getting wet - handy for other uses, too

Get a contractor bag which are a much more durable than your standard trash bag. You can find these in white so you can see the contents of your pack easier. Get them at your local little hardware place. Line your pack with it. Now when you stuff your bag directly into your pack it has less chance of getting wet. Compression sacks are nice, but as long as your bag is not too bulky I think this way utilizes space better.

I have an arcteryx pack that's 100% waterproof. No worries on external moisture
