AT Gear

by bird » Tue Dec 22, 2009 12:47 am

I need skis for a trip to Katahdin this winter and eventually Denali.
While I have extensive in-bound ski experience, I know virtually nothing about AT/Ski Mountaineering.
I will use these with Koflach Degre's (with intuition liners for Denali).
I am hoping to find used stuff that will do the job.
Any suggestions for Skis, Bindings and Skins?

Any old POS ski will do for what you're talking about. Bindings are quite a bit more limited. The Silvretta 500 is the only one I can think of off the top of my head that is compatible with plastic mountaineering boots. There might be one other out there, but the name escapes me at the moment. I've been happy with my BD skins, but they're the only ones I've used, so not much of a data point there.

Thanks Steve
So does everyone on Denali use Silvretta 500's?

Couldn't say. Everyone I saw on skis in the Ruth Gorge had them. You might be able to pick up a pair of 404s (the preceding version) used somewhere.

Hey Bird,

I use Silveretta 400s on a light weight ski for my approach set up. I'd be willing to bet you can find them on EBay.

I can make my Silvretta Pures work with mountaineering boots. And you still have a decent binding for real skiing. No hucking though.

I have silveretta 500's mounted on K2 shuksans and they work great! Can use them with my plastic mountaineering boots as well as a downhill boot.

While this is true, it is important to look at the weight of the ski, especially if you are purchasing new skis. If you are going to purchase a new pair of skis, you don't want to tour on a pair of skis that weight 9 lbs when you can get a pair that weights under 6 pounds (like the dynafit manaslu or some Ski Trabs). 3 pounds is a lot if you are going to be carrying multiple loads or touring long distances.
