Tallac winter routes

by rhyang » Tue Dec 22, 2009 7:47 pm

So I was perusing the Mt. Tallac page .. I've done a bunch of the peaks around Tahoe, but never Tallac

What routes are good this time of year (comparable to say, Round Top's west ridge or crescent moon couloir) ? I'd be taking snowshoes, ice axe & crampons. Hoping to not get run over by boarders & skiers :)

Rob, if you want to avoid the snowsporters stick to the Southern aspects, perhaps SE chutes. I would definitely avoid the NE bowl and Cross Couloir.

I would think the chutes need more snow right now. I am heading up on the 8th of January to take a looksee.

Hey Rob,
I would suggest NE Ridge/Bowl. There's definitely enough room there to avoid skiers. The last part of the climb is quite fun (I did it last Feb).

Rob, you may find the SE chutes too mellow. The Cross is the way to go IMO (although I only descended it and it was in the spring). Very fun route though and much steeper. Either way it's a nice hike.

What do you mean Guy -- Tallac sounds like a nice sunny snow climb :)

If you are doing this (Cross) in winter, I would avoid climbing it during good descent snow conditions or you will have an abundance of snowsporters dropping in. YMMV

Rob,

Plenty of lines go, in fact, lookers left of the cross has several narrow snow lines that will not see any action by boarders or skiers.

You could also try all of the lines on the west side of Angora Peak. The halls of god typically see boarders & skiers but there are several lines lookers left of the Halls that go through.

Snow is pretty stable right now. Have fun!
