Eureka Valley hikes?

by thexcat » Wed Dec 23, 2009 5:41 pm

I'll be in Eureka Valley for several days, camping near the Eureka dunes.

Any nice hikes in the valley besides the dunes? Can't find much documentation. I only have a 2wd and would like to minimize driving time.

Suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Eureka Valley is huge. And remote.

Check out the dry lake bed, the Last Chance Range to the east, the Sylvania and Piper regions to the north or giant canyons of the Saline Range to the west. Lots of space to explore.

I've attempted Saline Peak from the dunes, it was a very long day and we never got close.

Always wanted to hike to the other dunes at the mouth of Marble Canyon, on the west side, south of the main road. It looks to be about 6-7 mi. by the shortest route through the valley, and maybe 10-12 mi. (depending on 4wd access) by going down Marble Canyon from the Saline Road.

EDIT: I think these would be located at right background in Clydascope's excellent picture.

Tom, Clydascope - Thanks for the suggestions.

For the moment, I'm considering - Last Chance Mountain on the northern tip of the Last Chance Range or the other dunes Tom mentioned.

Here is a trip report from a hike I did down there last winter. I think a hike up Sandy Mountain from the dunes would be good too.
