Climbing goals for 2010?

by kheegster » Thu Dec 31, 2009 5:15 pm

What are your climbing goals for 2010? For me:

General goals:
- Lead WI4
- Lead easy 5.9
- Avalanche knowledge
- Fit enough to do fast-and-light Alpine style climbs

Specific routes:
- Colden Slide and Gothics NF, ADK, NY
- Pinnacle Gully, Mt Washington, NH
- N Ridge of Mt Stuart, WA
- N Ridge of Mt Baker, WA, fast-and-light
- Either Liberty Ridge or Kautz on Rainier, WA (fast-and-light if the latter)

My general goals are pretty similar to yours - get comfortable leading moderate ice, improve my rock leading level, take a formal avalanche class, and also practice glacier travel and crevasse rescue, which I have gotten formal training on but use rarely so am perpetually rusty.

The bottom line is that I just need to spend more time on the rock (and ice!) than I did last year so I get my trad leading skills sharper. I searched for and bought a house, moved in, and did a lot of repairs, which pretty much gutted out the spring, summer and fall of last year. Got a lot of diving in, but that's because I can do it as a partial-day thing, whereas most of the climbing I want to do is a full weekend set-aside.

As for specific goals, I've wanted to climb North Palisade for a long time, and also would like to do a long glaciated route without a guide or much more experienced partner.

Sounds pretty similar to me! I'd join you on any of those WA routes if you need a partner, especially the N ridge of Baker. I'd like to lead 5.9 trad, don't know my ice climbing goals yet (still establishing them), traverse the Liberty Bell Group, climb Forbidden Peak by any route, and climb anything else that presents itself.

Climbing out of bed every morning. Anyone who's seen my loft space knows that it really is a climb....

Climbing something other than the walls.

All I want is to have my peace of mind.

And to get out west once or twice to (at a minimum) drink beer at higher elevation.
