The Ranger at the Baldy Visitors Center told me this morning I wasn't going to make it up DBB without crampons.

I think we hit a grand total of four patches of snow, none of which were crampon worthy.

I'm not going to bother asking San Gabriel Rangers for trail info anymore.

That's pretty stupid. They probably don't leave their offices too often.

Which has less snow- DBB or Ski Hut?

by LMo » Wed Apr 29, 2009 7:05 pm

I am trying to avoid the snow, which trail is less snow covered? Any of the snow patches on these trails worth bringing crampons/ice axe or could they just be avoided by walking around?

Thanks!

When I went on Friday, the Devils Backbone was virtually snow free. The few patches (three or four) were small, not crampon worthy, and easy to navigate around if you really wanted to. Haven't been up any of the other trails, so I couldn't tell you about those. Hope that helps!

A couple inches of softer snow over a consolidated (hard icy) base of 3" to 1' on last Thursday. It was hot up there and my guess is things are deteriorating quickly.

Dunno, but holy shit the snowline is higher on Baldy today than it was two weeks ago.

At least not for another week it looks like. I can pretty much see the snowline moving up by looking at it

Anybody know if there's any snow before the Ski Hut? I may get up there mid week and don't want to over/under dress.

It was surprisingly warm and still, except for the rockfall in the bowl!
It took 'till noon to begin softening up on the summit, though.

I heard from a SAR person that a woman slid partway down the bowl on Sunday, but she was able to walk out on her own.

There were a lot of rocks falling in the bowl on Sunday. We crossed over and climbed the very left/west side where rockfall wasn't a major issue, but a nice big rock went flying by as we crossed the bottom of the bowl - it was very icy near the top on the left (west) side. We came down via the trail route like most folks were doing.
