gonup wrote:i'm headed to climb kilimanjaro in about a month. though the mt itself isn't a major concern for malaria, i'll be spending plenty of time exploring in more risky areas. my question is: what malaria prophylaxis is the best, or has anyone used. i've noticed that many of the side effects of some of the meds are the same as altitude sickness and, i it's possible, i'd sure like to be able to distinguish if my ailments are from the pills or the altitude.

i'd appreciate your help. thanks

I realize this is an old thread, but for anyone searching, I used doxycyclene when I was in Africa and experienced zero side effects. Make sure to get a Primaquine shot when you get back to the States to flush any remaining malaria out of the liver.

I have spent a lot of time in Jungle areas and other areas prone to Malaria and do not use anti-malarials.

Mosquitos only fly to around 1600 metres and only of concern generally dawn and dusk at levels below this.

Cover up arms, legs, feet and use some Deet at low altitudes

Yo don't need to take your doxy after Day 1 (or after you exit the forest) there are no mosquito above this height. We started back up after the summit when we headed back down to Mweka.
