Mt Hood?

by Mjollnir » Tue Feb 02, 2010 11:19 pm

Anyone been up there lately? I'm looking at the Sandy Glacier Headwall (or potentially the Yocum if the rime looks good). Any info current conditions is much appreciated. Thanks!

Went up to Illumination Rock Sunday and we were the first ones there in fresh snow. Think they got 3 inches Saturday but had not had anything for about 3 days prior. Would have been better if I'd taken snowshoes as I was postholing shin deep. Beautiful weather there Sunday and today. Was balmy in the sun at 9500 feet Sunday. Don't know more about the west side routes except there were no tracks on the other side of the saddle heading over that way. My guess is you'd be kicking some deep tracks over the Reid. The top layer of snow was pretty grainy though and we did see several slab avalanches off I Rock and West Crater Rim while we were there.

Saw some summiting via South Side on Sunday in the afternoon. May want to check cascadeclimbers.com for conditions.

Doubt Yocum is in shape. Saw a lot of chunks falling off I Rock and others. Some bare rock spots around the Crater Rock vents too.

I posted some pics on the Hood page that might show the saddle area.
