When there is blame to be placed, the attorneys go after all of the money. You might take the blame for screwing up, but then you then might be dead. I wouldn't go with just anybody, as I do not like the idea of being hurt or killed as well. Same with instruction. If you didn't listen, as many do, and got me killed as well, I think my next of kin would rather see some justice done.
The MLC SC here, has people in charge who cannot tie their own basic knots (just the way they are). It's not important to them, as it might not be their life. One mistake and it's down you go to your death. A big "I'm sorry" wouldn't cut it if it were my loved ones.
What you ask to be trained for free or at little expense, well, you may find someone in your area. I'd look around at REI, they sell all the climbing stuff, so they incur some responsibility. We have good climbing schools here about CA, and capable guides and instructors, too. There is probably some outfit to take you up Hood or what, watch out for rogue guides (USFS).
After the attorneys got through with our activities here, everything soared as far as legal costs. From $8 a day (1971) climbing classes to now $200/day or more. When you do get someone, be sure to have some knowledgeable person read the disclaimer or waiver, if you cannot. Most people say the hell with this all. Not knowing what rights you are signing away, many may refuse computers and all due to the complex, long SLAs, too.
Too many people die from such sports. New laws are being considered. Just the way it goes. If you can get an experienced climber buddy, one worthy of your trust, and for sure, I'd spare no expense and be as generous or as nice as you can be. If that was what it took. Then watch out for "friends." Some will get you killed, and quickly. I give a heads up on those like that here, but then I get to be the target of mindless attacks, every time I mention them exactly as they are!
