I am going to be working near Butte for a couple of weeks around the end of March and the early part of April and I am going to have weekends to myself. Any good skiing / ice climbing / anything I should look into while I am there?

Explore the Bozeman Area, especially Hyalite Canyon area for lots of hiking and Ice climbing opportunity's. Anywhere in SW MT is absolutely gorgeous! Cheers!

I grew up in Butte and while there is some backcounty skiing and some ice to climb. I would agree that the Bozeman area offers many more options. It's only 80 miles east which equates to an hour or less on MT interstates. Hyalite Canyon isn't far from Bozeman. Not sure how ice conditions are that time of year. Might check CascadeClimbers.com for more detailed info.

Discovery Basin near Georgetown Lake is is the closest ski area to Butte and cheapest, 45 miles away. Bridger is the closest option near Bozeman at 100 miles and of course Montana's best skiing, so some say, is Big Sky which is roughly 130 miles but the most expensive. Disco and Bridger close Apr. 4 and Big Sky closes the 11th.

Sorry I can't help much in the backcounty skiing side of things

After a long day of skiing or climbing, Norris Hotsprings on the way back to Butte is a great place to relax.

The road up Hyalite closes at the end of March, so get there before that if you want spectacular ice. Check montanaice.com for conditions and such. If the weather is nice, there is pretty good bouldering and rock climbing around Butte and Whitehall. Spire rock, Whiskey gulch, homestake pass. You might hit the pre-runoff fishing on the Big Hole, that could be pretty good, too.
