by requiem » Mon Mar 29, 2010 8:27 pm

hi all,

got an email thru the a local hiking club concerning our friend PellucidWombat (http://www.summitpost.org/user_page.php?user_id=12893) (Mark Thomas) and Tom Bennett.

This is not the first time Mark and Tom have been on Shasta together. Check out his trip report from earlier this month.

It sounds like Mark is in good health so far but Tom is in trouble. I hope they get help soon. I'd hate for them to spend another night on the muntain without supplies.

Wow I just talked with Mark last week about doing a trip in the Sierra. From reading the report, it sounds like his partner is in trouble. Mark's strong and I'm hoping that he'll be able to help Thomas. Mark left a message on Facebook about Shasta Thursday afternoon so I'm hoping that they did this as an overnighter so that they have a high camp to retreat to. Really hoping for the best here.

My prayers go to them and their families. I am hoping for the best outcome and that is a safe return of them.

I was on the summit at 12:30pm on Saturday. Didn't see anyone stranded on the summit plateau but didn't walk all the way over to the north side either. The general summit area was extremely windy.

Saw three other people total that day: a solo guy who had also done Green Butte/Sargents, a solo guy who had done Casaval and was descending Casaval, and one other solo guy who had done Avalanche Gulch from Helen Lake.

Very sad to hear about this. Fingers crossed for these guys.

Mark is a good friend and an experienced mountaineer. My best wishes and prayers for a safe return to both Mark and Tom!

I've locked this thread. Please refer to the other thread in the CA forum which is still active. Out of respect for the families involved, please do not respond to posts by new members who may be trolling either legitimately (as was an Oakland Tribune reporter) or otherwise (just to cause trouble). Please just report them to the elves so they can be removed. Thanks.
