Stitching patches on clothing

by peterline » Mon Apr 05, 2010 10:48 pm

Guys, I've got some patches to stich on my clothing (windstopper jacket, down jacket, fleece...) and was wondering if I would damage my gear by stitching them on those items (i.e. loss of waterproofability...). I know that the dow jacket got 2 front pockets so I was thinking on stitching them on these pockets but I don' thave such things on my other gear.

Thanks

If it was me I wouldn't worry about the waterproofness of the jackets. I don't think you'd just wear Windpro or fleece in the rain and if it's cold enough for down it won't be raining.

As a Boy Scout patch geek I usually just get jackets for patches and jackets for function.

Pokin needle holes in a waterpoof shell is gonna poke holes in it ya know. Water and stuff gets in holes.

Doesn't matter if you're not too serious about function.

Just seam grip the patch when you're done if it's a WP piece of gear. Patch will last longer then too.

+1
Yep, I do the same. Apply it over the stitching.

On downwear, sew through the pocket if possible. If not, use a very small needle and small stitch to catch only the nylon outer shell.
