Snow shovel blade for ice axe?

by Kai » Sun May 30, 2010 11:41 pm

Chouinard Equipment used to make a snow shovel blade that attaches to the handle of an ice axe.

Does anyone else make one of these any more?

I did lots of Googling, and all I could find was this Japanese one:

No one makes one like the Chouinard. (which they no longer make) The final version was 7075 alum. black powder coated and could be used as a deadman and stove stand.

It weighs 13.5 oz W/O handle

the only drawback was you had to have a conventional shape straight shaft axe to put it on, IOW a standard alpine axe.

the Viole XLM weighs 16 oz

Been looking for something like this for a long time. I have that Viole shovel. Purchased it because it looked like the easiest to take a hammer to and make it fit my tools. I haven't gotten around to it yet.

That Japanese m19 thing looks interesting. Gives me a couple ideas at least.

This seems like a brilliant idea, it just seems to lack proper development.

Can anyone say what the thicknes of the aluminum that Chouinard used? I may be able to have one made by a fabricator freind of mine.

I may be able to make one from fiberglass or Carbon fiber, but I lack the autoclave neccesary to make it as strong as it could be.
