I will be doing Longs the first week in Aug with my GF and was wondering what some of you think. I don't want to bring mine and not have one for her We are going up the Loft and down the Keyhole.

Anyone have a helmet they'd like to part with

If descending the Keyhole, you may just find a helmet useful in the Trough. Unless, of course, you trust 50 or more strangers (and more than a handful of tourons and first-timers) NOT to kick ample loose rock down a couloir at you. Your choice.

Do ya like her at all . . . show her you care just enough––you can get a helmet for less than $100 bucks, or just use a bike helmet, like a lot of folks seem to do.

A helmut up the Loft? No. Not necessary.
Wearing one in the Trough? That would be a good idea.
Like Sarah said, the Keyhole Route is popular and it sees MANY inexperienced and would-be climbers who don't know what responsible climbing is.

Is there much loose rock left? I went up the north "face" cable route in 1971, and came down the trough, through the keyhole. There were lots of people, but I don't recall much loose rock.

Yes there is loads of loose rock in the Trough.

Reminds me of when I climbed the route via the Keyhole / Trough. I had my helmet strapped to the back of my pack, and was teased by lots of others as we hiked along.

Then we got to the Trough, where I put the helmet on. Before long, people were trying to bribe me to give them my helmet. One guy offered $1,000. I figured my brain and my life were worth a great deal more than that, so I kept my helmet.

Just a $100 bucks...?? Have you seen it out there. They're cutting off unemployment at 300 weeks now. Also, I live in MN so every hike or climb I go on comes with an airline ticket. Just a $100 bucks...sheeze.

my BD half dome cost about half that. you can buy a bike helmet (better than nothing) at walmart for like $20. protect your noggin, dude.

I was being sarcastic. Our heads are very important to us when it comes to our future plans I'm going to pick up an Ecrin Rock for her as consenus seems to be for helmet use in the trough. It will be nice for her to have around even if it won't see a ton of use.
