Conditions on University Pass above Robinson Lake

by mhengst » Sun Jul 18, 2010 6:00 pm

Has anyone been up near Robinson Lake or University recently and can give me an idea of what the snow is like on the climb to the pass?

I'm doing a trip to Center Basin in two weeks and I'm looking for whether it's passable without snow gear or if we'll have to take the long way around (Kearsarge.)

I went over University Pass July 6 from Center Basin to Robinson, only that direction.

On the north side was a very nice glissade all the way down to bottom, then a few snow fields to make getting by the talus easier, and another glissade much of the way down to the lake. Some surely has melted out but I'd expect snow on the steeper portion. Depends on when you hit it- if early might need crampons and ax. If later maybe just an ax. I only had the ax, but was also only going down. But two more weeks from now and maybe a way around...

Here it is- July 6. The low point on the left.
