Database Purge To Occur Soon-- Check Your Inbox

by Bob Sihler » Mon Sep 20, 2010 1:37 pm

Please check your Inbox for an important and time-sensitive message.

If you do not know what your Inbox is, here is the message:

Greetings Fellow SPers,

In order to clear database space to help SP run faster and smoother,
there will be a purge of the PM database a week from today (Monday,
September 20, 2010).

This will only affect PM that is one year or older. If you have such
messages in your Inbox and wish to save them, please do so before next
Monday, after which they will be permanently gone.

Also, now is a good time to delete any dead weight you may have on your
profile. Pictures that have no real use, unfinished pages, outdated or
irrelevant pages, etc.. In short, if you do not need it anymore and it
does not benefit SP's users, please delete it. Until now, deleted pages
have been retrievable in many cases, but this time, they will be gone for
good, freeing up more room in the database.

There will be a reminder about this on Thursday or Friday of this week.

Thank you for your contributions to and interest in SP, and thank you for
any help you can provide in clearing space on the site.

Sincerely,

The Elves

Feel free to comment on this, but this thread will be deleted next week after the purge occurs.

If we need to free up space, we should get rid of the photo albums. If a photo isn't needed for a page or a profile, then it itsn't needed.

Not that I know of. Myself, I will copy mine and paste them all into one email so I don't have to do separate ones.

I only have a few worth saving, anyway, and I've always been pretty OCD about keeping my Inbox clean; after being here for six years, I have just three pages of PM's, and only a few messages that are more than a year old.

Just to be clear-- you don't have to delete your old PM's yourself; Matt will do that for you in one fell swoop next week.

It's stuff like junk photos, junk albums, page histories, obsolete or useless pages, etc. that we'd appreciate if you deleted.
This time, it will be gone for good and will truly free up space.

I believe it has been mentioned previously, but I'll bring it up again. The gear section allows the checking of "View Histories," but there is no way to purge old pages. Any way to fix this? Will the upcoming purge automatically do with these pages what it's going to do with the PM's?

PM's were only introduced in 2006, with SPv2 as I recall. I usually just chuck old PM's in the archive box .. I had 51 pages worth in there ! Sounds like a good bit of that will be automatically deleted though. I'll clean up the last year's worth before then.

Is there any evidence that deleting previous page version and clearing old PMs speeds up the site, or only reduces storage space with little to no impact on speed?

It seems to me that things are being done to create the appearance of progress, in terms of improving performance.

Just cleaned all my PMs out. :D

Except one from the pesky elves that won't go!

Gonna have a real hot curry tonight, so that'll be two good purges in the same day!

I've used the "Album" flag to submit short TR's (you know, trying not to clutter up the what's new page's primo spots) - obviously hoping stuff does not get purged.

I would be fairly agitated if my one album got deleted. Some other folks have worthwhile ones too. You might be right 95% of the time, but some albums are worthwhile.
