Looking for some Alpine climbs in November (7 - 14Nov)

Postby WouterB » Sun Oct 17, 2010 4:54 pm

Got a week off from work in November and was hoping to go climbing. Last year I went to Morocco in November, which was VERY nice. Considered this again for this year, but ultimately decided to stick with the Alps. I'm hoping to climb some peaks during this period. Nothing too technical or exposed as I'm bringing along one of my not so "technical" friends.

Any suggestions?

Zugspitze and Hindelanger were discussed, but not agreed upon, as we know too little else to climb around there. Currently I'm thinking about Chamonix, Zermatt or Saas-Fee, as there is plenty to do around there - even if the weather turns bad. Also, there's plenty of mountains to climb and if the weather permits, you could even go high on one of the easier ones (allalin, breithorn,...).

Allalin is lift up, summit, lift down ... Maybe consider Lagginhorn? Also a nice via ferrata that might be considered to a neighbooring summit?

The lift is an option, yes. I haven't looked into this yet, but usually I avoid them. Also, in November it could be more complicated than the way you've described it.

Allalin, Breithorn, Lagginhorn and Weismies could fill the biggest part of a week. Especially if we added a rest day and some extra bad weather time. Sounds like an interesting goal. Biggest dependancy will probably be weather and snow conditions, so keep the suggestions coming. Could use some alternatives.

Depends on the level of your "not technical friend".
I did the Lagginhorn two weeks ago. Very easy scrambling there, but a "not technical" friend had to turn back at 3750m.
Did you ask this question also at hiking.be ?

Greetings,
Orlando

We attempted Zugspitze in deep winter, tried our luck on the Hindelanger klettersteig in winter, did Grossglockner together in winter and attempted Elbrus twice (summited once). He's been on a mountain before, knows the basics of glacier travel and feels comfortable in bad conditions. However, we also went rock climbing together on a couple of occasions. He just manages to climb a 4+, but never feels entirely comfortable on straight rock. 'Not technical' varies, I guess.

Been there before. Can't see myself doing much there. Except for maybe some rock climbing, which my friend obviously isn't into. Besides, I'm guessing this will go way over budget.
