Read the book first...and then saw the movie....the book is outstanding and the movie does a very good job with the story....definitely worth viewing.

Cliffhanger is as bad as Touching the Void is good

I can't stand anything with Sylvester Stallone in it. Therefore I'm saved from Cliffhanger.

I like it, a good movie and -as far as I remember- a faithful version of Simpson's story. An advisable watch. Go for it, no doubt

I actually saw the movie first and because I liked it so much I picked up the book afterwards. Both are great and both are definetely worth your time.

This is true. The only things cliffhanger has going for it are the scenery (the Dolomites), Janine Turner, and John Lithgow's portrayal of the bad guy.

It's a great film. Some of the best mountain photography I've ever seen. I still haven't read the book though everyone knows the story line, and the movie still seemed compelling.

Doesn't look like you rent that many movies, but if you do even infrequently Netflix is awesome. A whole year is cheaper than a couple of trips to the movies. Rent a DVD and hang on to it forever if you'd like. You can watch lots of movies instantly on your computer or stream it to your TV if you have a Wii.

Sorry to sound like a commercial for Netflix. Do check out the movie though. So rare that a good climbing film comes out.

Yea we don't rent alot of movies from big rental places, to expensive. Mostly we just pick up previously viewed ones since you can get them so cheap. Or rent from the convenience store down the road but they definitely don't carry less then widely popular to the main public climbing movies. Fortunately it seems like anything I needed (aka wanted) to find I managed to order from Chapters.

Saw the movie finally. It really was good. I liked how it wasn't just the story redone but had Joe commenting on parts and narrating. The actors were more just to emphasize his words then anything. I watched it with my husband who, even with my constant telling him to do so, had never read the book. He was really impressed. He was telling his friend all about it the next day, going on about it like I did the book... maybe there's hope for him yet. I was worried that they'ld leave out the part where he gets the song stuck in his head. That part was really, well sort of funny, to me because I know that song because when my son was really small it was his favorite and he wanted to listen to it all the time. But happily it was there too! So great movie and I'm glad that someone mentioned it.
