We came across SAR on Sunday afternoon; they had just started the search. She must've gone a decent way off the beaten path because a good amount of people were up there and I don't think anyone saw her, including ourselves.

The 40 pounds in the pack is interesting news. You gotta train but in this case the training my have killed her. This is in no way questioning her actions. Training is as dangerous as what your training for I guess.

I am shocked! I just heard the news right now. Really really sad. I feel so bad for her daughter. I met her in 2005. Over the years, Patty and i climbed with her in the Sierra and locally in LA on occasion. She had a kind soul.

Hopefully she already passed after the fall and didn't suffer much. RIP

The 40 pounds of rocks does seem a bit odd - if I want to train, I'll usually add more gear or water to my pack - things that may be useful should something go wrong.

My condolences to her family. I saw a photo of her on the San Gab board. She had a very engaging smile.

As far as training, I used to run into a couple guys who trained in the Strawberry Peak /Mount Lawlor area. They were preparing for Aconcagua carrying 40 to 60 pounds of rock and sand in their packs.

Sad news indeed.

Some people use rocks for training, because you can dump them on the summit. That way you can go light on the descent, lowering the strain on your knees.

I would guess that if she had rocks in her pack, then she was still going up when the accident happened.

I use water and typically pick up some rocks along the way but don't leave them on the summit - why make the peak taller?
Very sad that she was unable to summon someone for help. That's always a risk you have to be willing to take when going solo even in our friendly local mountains.

I think based on where they found her in the Fish Fork drainage, she may have fallen right down the north side of the summit area.
