2004 or earlier actually:

What happened was that during the transition to SPv2, a bunch existing "mountain" pages were converted to ranges. Their climber's logs were preserved. There wasn't a standard link to them from the left margin, but it wasn't hard to figure out a URL that would work. You could actually add a climbers log to most kinds of objects that way (but not a profile page last I checked).

Yes, that's a new feature added on December 17th. There were ways to workaround non-existent links on the area/range pages, but now all of them have links to climber's log easily accessible.
