That ammo box needed a rock banging even before the fire :)

Yeah, sorry about that. Michael Golden and I placed it there not that many years ago. The rubber seal might be good for keeping ammo dry, but it bakes in the summer sun, melting to form a tight bond. On the other hand, it makes sure that only the most determined get to sign in. :D

Rob, did you happen to get a pic from VC looking over to VDC?

Planning on heading up that way in Oct/Nov...

(That pic is the Pine Ridge past the Black Cone junction looking toward VC, right?)

These are from near the summit of VDC in June. There was still plenty of bushwhacking then, though, and I suspect it's only worse now.

Nice shots Finckster ! The brush actually looks a bit better than the last time I was up there .. May '08. Old maps show a trail from VDC over to Kandlbinder, but I'm told it has long since been reclaimed by the chaparral. Maybe the cross-country route from the north is a better bet after last year's fires ..

I did get a couple of pics looking that way, and posted one to the Ventana Cone page .. I don't think that section of the ridge burned though. In fact, the top of VC didn't seem to have burned -

You are correct about the location of the shot, though I came up from Pine Ridge camp after dropping my overnight gear, not directly from the junction.

Complete set here. Enjoy :)

Ya, apparently Bob did Kandlbinder last Friday :)

btw Over the weekend I hiked the Black Cone Trail and while pushing through the brush on the southern section found a couple items of gear. It was several pounds worth and from the looks of it I speculate it may have belonged to a group.

I posted a 'found gear' note on the VWA site, but their trailwork parties since last May didn't lose any stuff. So if you lost gear on the BCT since then, PM or email me with a description and I will do my best to get it back to you.
Taaaake !

Hey,

I am looking for recommendations on a two night backpacking trip out and back somewhere in Big Sur in mid April. Peaks not a necessity but they are always nice. Points for solitude and beauty. Any ideas? I have never hiked in the area and don't have any guidebooks or maps, so recommendations on those would be great too!

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Mike- whole bunch of Big Sur info over here:
http://www.ventanawild.org/forum08/index.php

For a 2 night April trip I'd recommend Bottchers Gap to Pat Spring with a Dayhike to Ventana Double Cone on the middle day.
Bring headnets, the flies might be out by April.
