Small or Medium Photos do not Deleted when Deleting Photos?

by Josh Lewis » Wed Mar 23, 2011 11:34 pm

I deleted a photo today which I noticed on my trip report I forgot to remove the code of the "deleted image" but then decided to link it to see if it would some how disappear if I took the code off the trip report. Nope, it's still on the server. Not only do I feel like my stuff is on sp "forever" but also I would think that would take a bit of server space if photos were deleted and they remain on the site.

The medium size image is still there:

The Small:

When deleting a photo it gets rid of the original, large, and thumbnail... but not the medium and the small. In my opinion I consider this a problem of sp. I know this is not just because of the move to rackspacecloud server, I've seen this even back in 2007. I'm not upset, I'm just a little disappointed.

It might take a day to clear the system.

Josh, I hope Matt's answer suffices. Speaking for myself, I tested this the other day with two photos of mine. At first, they were still on rackspace, but after an hour, both were gone for good.

I see, there gone. :) For a moment I thought there was a lot of photos that were "deleted" and had the medium image. So why does the original image go away right away but the smaller ones remain?

It takes time to find suitable homes for the rest of the litter.

Taking Matt's answer as a hint, it seems that the smaller images are essentially images made by or for a separate caching system, used to reduce server load (therefore improving the performance we've wrung our hands so much about lately). That caching system, as can be expected, follows different rules from the main business logic of the site.
