I did 6500' over 15 miles RT on Blanca in Summer, and 7400' and 14 miles on Whitney in Winter via the MR. In both cases I was only carrying a day pack and necessary gear, so the pack weight was 20 pound, tops. In both cases, up was easy, and I felt good. It was going down that wore me out. I remember hitting a point, about half down on both trips, where my legs were exhausted and my lower back, knees, and ankles would hurt. Having flat feet makes that much worse. Anyway, the next 3 or 4 days I'm usually very stiff in the legs. Those were day trips, but I've done over 4500' with a backpack on many different times. All were to go to higher basins in CO, CA, or WY. I was fine the next day or two to summit or climb. Once again going down was hard and that was where my legs got shredded.
