Mtn lion killed in CT

by Alpinist » Mon Jun 13, 2011 2:39 pm

A mountain lion, which is listed as extinct in the state, was hit and killed by an SUV on a highway in Milford, CT on Saturday. :(

"The closest confirmed population of mountain lions is in Missouri, half way across the country."

Back in 1989, A friend who lived in CT claimed that several people had seen mountain lions. Supposedly they were doing well living off the deer population. Just hearsay...

I've heard rumors of sightings in PA and in ME, with huge home ranges its possible to wander to CT. Although CT is also where that pet chimp ripped that womans face off so a pet is also possibility. I drove from NYC to VT for some hiking this weekend and probably didn't go more than 5 miles without spotting a deer at any point since leaving city so more than enough food for a few lions.

Around here, there have been a few sightings and captures, but they all turned out to be pets that were turned loose once the owner realized he didn't have a kitty cat anymore. It's sad for the lions.

There are people who swear they're in Shenandoah National Park, and there was once one killed along a nearby interstate, but rangers and wildlife officials have found no real evidence to support that the lions are back in their habitats naturally.

Here in the Hills just above Los Angeles they pluck off joggers from time to time. I've been lucky enough to see three of them in my lifetime though never once was I able to get a photo. I hope they are somehow making a comeback in the east.

Police shot a mountain lion just outside the city limits of Chicago a year or 2 ago. They cornered it in a dead end ally and said they "had" to shoot it because it turned on them. Hmm, I wonder what they expected would happen when you corner a lion. There had been unconfirmed sightings for 3-4 years prior to that.

There are probably more of them roaming around than people realize. The popular theory is that they travel along river banks by night, which aren't heavily developed or populated, and feed off of deer, rabbits, racoons and other small critters.

Edit: spelling

I've seen them along the Verde River here in AZ.

Very easy for them to roam the river. Lots of vegetative cover and abundance of critters to prey upon.

Only the river knows ..

I have heard of Mountain Lion sightings in the Allegheny region of PA. I think there's more than rangers would let on to believe.
