wheeler peak, nevada....road is open!

by nvskier1 » Wed May 25, 2011 6:07 pm

hey to all bc skiers.....didn't want to be selfish so thought I'd post this.....spent the last week in great basin backcountry and the corn situation was beyond words.....still freezing nicely above 9,500 at night and warming nicely during the day....coverage above that altitude looks like mid-winter, not mid-spring ......and now the road to the trailhead at 10,000 feet was opened on monday!.......spent most of my time in upper snake creek and mt washington areas skiing lines I had scouted previous summer.....cheers to all.....

Extremely JEALOUS. I never saw Johnson Lake and Pyramid Peak with that much snow before!

Thanks for posting !!! Awesome ..

So, the transformation is inevitable. All that melt-water will be flowing into the Sevier and Colorado Rivers. YEAH.

Yeah - you can see a big "glowing white patch" in the mountains above Vegas.

And ... it's NOT Charleston Heston's flowing white beard, or Elvis Presley's peanut butter and banana sandwich !!!

hey icarreau.....always thought great basin snowmelt stayed in great basin and never makes it to the sea.....no help for the colorado there.....but, yeah, there's a lot of snow left, might make it all thru the summer......on a side note, whatever was done right this fall to bring this most amazing snowpack....by whomever or whatever........ whether it involved snow dance circles, chants, prayers, positive thinking, animal or human sacrifice.......I'm not going to argue at this point....let's just all make sure we do exactly the same thing again this fall.......really please I mean it........cheers......

Just an update for anyone looking to climb Wheeler, heres the conditions as of today. The road to the trailhead is open but the gate is still locked to the campground.

Ice axe and crampons are still a must for the summit ridge. The western part of the summit is heavily corniced, and the other side will take you off the north face if you get to close, so take the right equipment. Snowshoe are still a good idea from the traihead all the way up.

hey agoldberger,
just got down from wheeler peak an hour ago.....if you want to make the summit you better start early.....there is still a lot of snow above 10,000', altho it hasn't been freezing at night lately.....lots of water running everywhere....plenty of stuff to ski still if you got a mind to.....road is open to 10,000 but upper campground is still not open as of today....might open for july 4th but not certain.......cheers
