you can have 1:24k, 1:100k, and 1:250k for free for all states in the usa, and free much more capable software than topo.

QGIS is an open source GIS program, every state has free scanned topos
http://atlas.ca.gov/ <---all the California Topos for free as well as tons of other stuff.

I know those, I've already printed some for a trip, just remember to keep those printouts in a waterproof map-case.

I just wanted to find an easy way to modify existing Garmin Maps like Ibycus's.

I've got a Garmin GPSMAP 62s, quite happy with it!
got a bunch of maps on the 8GB card I put on it.
