I remember visiting FL in the early 70s, just a boy then, and my grandparents lived in Largo. We used to see alligators walking around our neighborhood. It was always humid and rained a lot. We had to keep an eye on grandma's poodle to make sure it didn't become an alligator snack. The beach sure was pretty though. I remember lots of neat shells everywhere. I'd have to agree that if you like mountains, it's not a good place to be. I felt badly for the alligators too, they usually didn't fare well as the population of people increased.

Key West is great, been there twice. Quite the party town and Buffett tunes are played in all bars, they have a "titty bar", great reefs for snorkeling and diving, a great cigar company.
