I have not been on Buttermilk Road that leads from Hwy168 to Horton Creek Trailhead. How do you rate this road for two wheel, relatively low clearance vehicles? Is it worse than Taboose and Red Lake road?

I haven't been on the other two, but I would NOT recommend this to a low clearance vehicle too far beyond the cattle guard...



As Croft says, if you enjoy cammo and ammo (or I think his words may have been Budweiser and camo? I forget), this road is good. Otherwise.....enjoy an entertaining ride in your favorite friend's high clearance vehicle

Low clearance vehicle will contact your oil pan, guaranteed!

I haven't been on the Buttermilk Road either, but I've suddenly developed an intense craving for BUTTERMILK Pancakes.

Drove out there to ski Basin this past May and winter was not kind to the road beyond the cattle guard. Was very glad to be in my buddy's Pathfinder. The Horton Lakes road cutoff was easy to spot: someone had dug in and left a ridiculously deep hole.

I did it once with my subaru outback. Doable but rough. I stopped at the spring, about half a mile before the gate. I think it's slightly better than the road to Split.

My Nissan Sentra was never the same again. Highly unrecommended.

Ditto Chief's statement. Drove both lower and upper approaches, the upper approach just a month (or so) ago, you are likely to get stuck with 2wd and no high clearance.

If you see a mudflap from a 2001 Chevy trailblazer it's mine.

I've driven that road quite a bit for work and seen quite a few people make it farther than I would take my personal car. At the trailhead for Horton I saw some kind of Kia sedan and a Subaru Outback. I have also seen a Mazdasport wagon of some kind parked just before the crossing of McGee Creek. It depends on how gutsy you are with your vehicle.

You can easily get a sedan up to the cattle guard near the bouldering destinations and hike in the last couple miles along the road. If you're planning on doing Mt. Tom, an alternative is to hike in to Gable Lakes and hop on the south ridge there.
