Leaving a vehicle overnight Willows/Williams area I-5

by jibmaster » Thu Oct 20, 2011 5:25 pm

Trying to carpool to Shasta with someone from Stockton. I'm coming from the North Bay.
I take the 20 to the 5. Any suggestions on leaving my Jeep in a safe spot overnight. Tuesday afternoon - Wednesday afternoon. Anyone live near the 5 that has some spare room in their driveway?

That's a good idea. Lots of cops hang out there.

I have parked my truck at WalMart under these circumstances. No one suspects anything is up and there's always enough traffic that your car won't be all alone in the middle of the night. For 24 hrs you probably are okay. Longer than that and someone may inquire.

Just called Orv's gas station in Williams. The place is not open all night. Only street parking.
Still looking...

What about at one of the casinos in the area?

:D There are several to choose from and they are 24 hours, seems like a logical place? Do you gamble? Maybe win a few bucks on your way home.

That's not such a bad idea. I do gamble. I'll never forget one trip to Lassen. We left early in the morning for a day trip.
Sometimes I stop at the Rolling Hills Casino to grab a quick/cheap breakfast. On this day, I was with my buddy jibC and we pulled in around 2am. When we got to the buffet, it was closed for 45 minutes for cleaning.
What would have been an $8(maybe $10-can't remember) breakfast, turned into a black hole costing me a little over $100!

Other times, I have paid for the trip by winning. Maybe I'll press my luck...

The Casinos or Wal-Marts both seem like decent ideas to me. If you want to push it to Anderson/Redding Airport area I know a safe place within 5 minutes of I-5 that you could park, but by then, you'd be more than an hour closer to Mount Shasta than your listed goal, and nearly within an hour of the mountain. Anyway, PM me if interested.

Not that it matters, but y'all are welcome to leave a vehicle at my place, if necessary.

Thanx for the suggestions. Found a spot that worked out.

Drove all the way to Shasta and got froze out. Woke up at 4am to 14*F at 6700'.
High winds could be heard all night above us, although it was calm at camp.
Driving up the 5 in the Jeep was interesting with 30-50mph? head winds (the trees along the highway were getting super thrashed - it looked like a hurricane).
Snow line starts at 9000', with the best skiing from 10,000'-12,000'.
Decided to bail.
Came home and got on the computer. A high of 32* at 9000'. Winds 20mph - 60+ - on the south side which was protected from the strong wind coming from the north.

Some of my favorite shots from Tuesday evening:
