Hans Kammerlander first to climb 2nd Seven Summits

by Cy Kaicener » Fri Jan 06, 2012 4:00 pm

Hans Kammerlander has become the first person to climb the Second Seven Summits on each continent as per Planet Mountain. These are more difficult than the seven highest. He finished on Mt Tyree

Kammerlander did 7 8,000ers alpine style with Messner in the 80's. One of the great mountaineers

Sad about what happened on Manaslu. Surprised the altitude typo on the first line of the Planet Mountain article is still there.

So "skyrunner" Christian Stangl (who joined Kamerlander) has now also climbed an important mountain (his aim are the "third seven summits")
together with a reliable witness.

In one of Greg Child's books he joked about trying to be the first person to climb the second highest summits, as at that point he had climbed a couple of the more difficult ones including K2

Big call on Trikora, instead of Mandala. Not sure where he got his info from.............

Thats the best thing about these "____" seven summits lists, it takes people to places rarely heard of let alone visited.

Mountains in Papua are epic - their remoteness including transport logistics make half the challenge. The beauty of that part of the world is another thing..........

I'm just back from Antarctica, guiding a ski trip to the Pole, not climbing this time. I briefly caught up with Chris Stangl, with whom I attempted Tyree in 2008.

Hans only went to the west summit of Logan, not the main summit, so he has to go back to claim the 2nd7. Chris still needs K2.

Chris is already going for the 3rd7, as he has already climbed Kanchengjunga (2011) and Mount Shinn (2008) - with photos ;-)

There are some other issues with the peaks on the 2nd7 list, so the game is not over yet. Lots of secrecy and sneaking around been going on!

As for that PlanetMountain article, yes, there is now an argument for Mandala over Trikora, and no, Hans did not invent the concept of the Second Seven Summits.

I've heard the idea might've been first mentioned by Piotr Pustelnik but I'm not sure.

Is there a list of the highest peaks on each continent with no known ascent ? Are there any in North & South America ?
