Kilimanjaro Gear Question

Postby climbmn » Tue May 24, 2011 3:26 pm

I will be on the Machame route next month and am wondering if Gore-Tex pants and glacier glasses are needed? I will be taking my soft shell pants and also Marmot Pre-Cip pants so do I also need Gore-Tex?

Thanks

I saw them carry down plenty of guides and porters who had fallen victim to snowblindness in February, so I wouldn't go without glasses. Soft shell pants on the other hand will do just fine.

I wore my Gortex pants with fleece layers on summit day. I was also glad to have a down jacket. Most didn’t and many were cold at dawn just above Stella. Not sure what the Pre-Cips are, but I’d say a wind blocking shell with insulating layers is prudent.

For most of the hike I wore hiking pants and packed a fleece jacket & light Marmot shell jacket. Gators were good for the dust more than the mud. They also controlled my pant legs in the choos.

It’s high altitude so even if you aren’t actually on glacier you’ll still want high end glasses with side protection.

Here is my trip report with clothing details:

I like the feedback that you got so far,I liked having a camelbak with me; but make sure the tubes are insulated otherwise it'll almost certainly have a freezing breakdown on your summit attempt.

Unless something remarkable happens (like rapid massive glacier growth) between now and when you trek (note, this is really not a climb) or if you think you'll be spending a lot of time on Arrow Glacier or something, you don't need the ice axe or mountaineering boots. There's nothing to self-arrest yourself on. The only exception may be the steep glade of scree between Barafu and the Summit and nobody's going to be roped to you. On the way down, anybody can do it, but plunge stepping will work just fine.

I was fine with regular sunglasses. Carry enough insulating layers and a shell and you'll be fine.
