Happy 100th birthday, Arizona!

by Sarah Simon » Tue Feb 14, 2012 2:19 pm

Gotta love a place where I can take the dog for her morning walk in flip flops, and hike in the mountains in a t-shirt...in the middle of February. (Then again, if I dared to return in the summer I could fry an egg on the sidewalk.)

Happy 100th, Arizona! I think I'll go climb a nice desert peak this weekend to celebrate. (You know, try something different from my usual routine.)

There, I'll leave plenty of space for Larry to post some vintage Emerson Lake and Palmer YouTube video.

Happy Birthday to my favorite state! We were the last state - the 48th - before Alaska and Hawaii. We celebrated with a great climb up Coyote Peak last weekend:

http://www.summitpost.org/coyote-peak/375489

A glorious, bright blue, bone-dry February afternoon, with views 100+ miles in all directions.

Even in summer when we're pushing 120 F, at least it doesn't collect in drifts 8 feet high and rust one's car from the bottom up. That's why they invented little bottles of cold drinking water.

And in my 20 years here, I've always been amazed by the lack of flies. They're just not here that much. Go anywhere east of the Rockies in summer and you're being bombarded by bugs of all sizes.

Let's all go to the bar with our guns to celebrate.

Nah, I shoot first, then drink. I don't handle my arsenal after consuming beverages. Personal preference, I guess.

It's especially fun to combine target shooting with peak hunting and Jeeping in a multi-sport day - just pick your spent casings up when finished. :P Try it sometime. :D

Sarah, I fried TWO eggs on the sidewalk last summer. Will be going for the record this year.

Did you ever notice how GOOD things always come in two's ? Take Pink Floyd's album "A NICE PAIR" for example.

Thanks for the space - can always use space on VD ... Valentine's Day. Smooch ....... :D

WAIT-A-MINUTE ... Stevie Nicks was born in Arizona, so guess THIS would be more "viewer-friendly ..."

Be sure to mention Alice Cooper, The Tubes and Linda Ronstadt, among others.

Ok, ExitableBoy can talk all the snarky anti-2nd Amendment smack that he wants and I'll let it slide. But you, sir, have uttered fightin' words.

I love Colorado, too, but...I mean, does Colorado have this?

SenadR, this is all, of course, totally tongue-in-cheek. ;)

I'm not against the second Amendment, I'm all for 'a well regulated militia', its stupid ass legislation that I'm against. What part do drunks with hand guns have to play in a well regulated militia?

With my son moving to Arizona last August, my wife and I got to spend Christmas in the Scottsdale/Gilbert area. It was WONDERFUL. Can't wait to get back. Happy Birthday indeed Arizona. Arizona HIghways magazine was always in our home when I grew up in So Cal. Beautiful areas in that state.
