Burnett Peak/Santa Lucia Range - Any Beta?

Postby Jesus Malverde » Sun Jan 22, 2012 7:28 pm

Hi folks,
I'm wondering if anybody out there has any information on hiking/climbing Burnett Peak in the Santa Lucia Range. Burnett peak is the striking peak that is visible from (and due south of) Hearst Castle and it looks like a very tempting peak to climb. A 30-minute search on Summitpost.org and Google has revealed very little except that Rocky Butte Truck Trail (just north of the peak) has closed access?

Burnett Peak doesn't appear to be on the California Coastal Peaks list either:

Does anyone have any beta on hiking/climbing this thing?

Thanks in advance for any information you may provide!

Strange: I couldn't find any pictures of Burnett Peak with a Google images search. Here's a painting of the peak from Heast Castle (if image doesn't load in browser, double click on the image icon):

Haven't heard of anyone venturing out there. It appears to be surrounded by private property. It looks to be about 6 miles south from the end of South Coast Rd, all on dirt roads. You could drive out to the end of South Coast Rd and hike from there I'd imagine with little chance of running into anyone. It's pretty remote.

I was up there yesterday.... Great views of Hearst castle as well as Lime Mountain and Lake Nacimiento. San Simeon and in the distance the light house. There are No trespass signs everywhere ala Hearst Co. We were laying an access rd to a remote camp on the ridge. I have a few pictures but the board here says they are too large... Maybe post later....
