Songs about Colorado (or the mountains therein)

Postby Bubba Suess » Fri Mar 09, 2012 5:56 am

This one is a bit random and not a typical forum topic. I am looking for songs about Colorado or the mountains in it. I am already aware of "Colorado" by Manassas, "Colorado" by the Flying Burrito Brothers, "Good Feeling to Know" by Poco, "Going Back to Colorado" by Zephyr and anything tangentially referencing the mountains by Joe Walsh. I can't stand Bob Denver. Any other suggestions are most welcome! Thanks!

What do you have against Gilligan? I don't know of any songs that he sang about Colorado anyway.

Snowin' on Raton by Townes van Zandt, covered by many.

Kate Wolf's Telluride is explicitly Colorado, others like Across the Great Divide and Like a River sure seem like Colorado.

There a bluegrass band called Head for the Hills that have a number of more and less explicitly Colorado songs.

Not specificially about Colorado, but a great song about the mountains is "Up The Canyon" by The String Cheese Incident.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katharine_Lee_BatesThe first draft of "America the Beautiful" was hastily jotted down in a notebook during the summer of 1893, which Bates spent teaching English at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Later she remembered:

One day some of the other teachers and I decided to go on a trip to 14,000-foot Pikes Peak. We hired a prairie wagon. Near the top we had to leave the wagon and go the rest of the way on mules. I was very tired. But when I saw the view, I felt great joy. All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse.

I can't believe I did that. Talk about absent minded. I forgot to add The Great Divide's San Isabella to me list as well. I totally forgot about Snowing On Raton. I have heard a number of versions but Van Zant's is still the best. Thanks for all the suggestions. Of course, more are welcome!

Ray rocks! You can't be in a bad mood when you listen to Ray sing...even when he's singing the blues.

I had heard the story before about the mountains of Colorado inspiring America the Beautiful. I thought it was the Maroon Bells (the obvious purple) that inspired the song...maybe not based upon this info.

As for Across the Great Divide...I really like Bob Dylan, but I LOVE The Band!! Considering they are from Canada maybe they were refering to the great divide in the Canadian Rockies.... :D

Pretty much any song on Chuck Pyle's "Higher Ground"album. On the instrumental side, try Roby Deaton's XIV Colorado Elysium, each song inspired by a different 14er.

Now I'm going to have to go look for all the songs mentioned above too! :D

Suzy Bogguss' cover of Ian Tyson's Someday Soon gets me to thinking about Colorado, even though that's not the main theme of the song.
